Centerback Gregg Berhalter has been released by his German club Munich 1860 so he can come home to play in MLS. No word on who he will sign for, but rumors have spread about LA having first shot at him, so you can expect them to snap up the 35 year old and pair him the 37 year old Tony Sanneh, making them the oldest duo this side of AC Milan. Good for Berhalter. Bad for LA.

We are hearing that New York City has a 2nd competitor for a 2nd MLS team. For several years we have been told that the Wilpon family who own the New York Metropolitans baseball team were interested in MLS, but now big moneyed Mexican Carlos Slim, founder of Telmex, has put together a group of investors, and are searching for a team president with MLS experience, to go after a team that would be based in Queens. They seem very serious and may have already met with MLS brass.

Greg Seltzer at Soccer 365 reports that Telmex has also acquired the rights to soccer internet message board leaders Big Soccer.

Why don't they bring back Abel Xavier and Greg Vanney going for the oldest back line in the history of professional football? Heck, throw Alexei Lalas back there for giggles.
Too bad for Bruce Arena and co its vastly closer to 2010 than 2000.
